The Betsy Jane

from Songs from the Solway EP by Gandalf's Fist

/

about

Here we have it! A Gandalf's Fist Sea Shanty! Luke had great fun recording the vocals to this one, and after I'd finished me grog I jumped in with some backing swashbuckle!

The lyrics tell the story of a legendary ghost ship on the Solway firth where an evil slaver captain once tried to make port during a particularly bad storm one Christmas Day.
As penance, he was forced to sail the seas for eternity, only glimpsed every December 25th...

Trying once more to make port somewhere in West Cumbria... Ho-ho-ho!

lyrics

Time has come on this winters day,
All the voices I hear all the passion play,
Over seas and tides, tonight we pray,
Seek the shadow of the Betsy Jane.

Morning bells for the lives that passed,
All the souls we gave are tied to the mast,
And we sail along this holy day,
Fear the shadow of the Betsy Jane.

Never free from our ghostly veil,
And no mortal port will welcome our sail,
As the waves lap the shore, evermore we pray,
For death from the gallows of the Betsy Jane.
