A Forest of Fey

by Gandalf's Fist

1.
Open my eyes, I see what I want to see The way I’m feeling; a time for childhood ghosts Over the way the light shapes our everydays If I start crying I don’t think I’ll know Stay, Stay Oh the light, it never stays Stay, Stay Oh the light, never stayed Stayed away…

Beyond the lights of border kings There hangs a gate of mystery You’ve seen it hanging there before Locked tight each night with ivy crawl Listen Child please step inside The forest gate is open wide Behind the leaves the trees unfurl A secret key a hidden door... An old figure standing in your way Dressed in smoke, he begs for you to stay You run, the gate slams, and crumbles into dust Welcome home… to the gardens of the lost Don’t leave the path the whispers scream Don’t leave the path the forest breathes You thought that you wanted to see inside But now there's doubts running through your mind Figures passing through the trees In jesters rags the poet dreams The lights that are leading you from the road Are fires that are taking you far from home Never-ending Fantasy You’re running in the night Living in a fairy-tale You’re running in the night… again Wished it once, you wished it twice You play the game you pay the price Each step that you take is not your own Now eyes from the path begin to glow Alas poor world I knew it well, Is all bygone to this new hell A wayward nature plays its cruel game You feel so lost you feel ashamed never-ending fantasy You’re running in the night Living in a fairy-tale You’re running in the night Living in a fairy tale of pain Running in the night Fairy-tale of pain Running in the night

Falling leaves guide me Where the shadow dreads to roam As you leave the path again The worms take you home Take me home; on down the road I see them so far away Through seven hells I’m taking them there as you feel the night following Everybody sees what you want to see Take life from me Feel the fear; the screams are near The creatures are out of sight You wanna know what’s keeping you low You’re feeling the hands of time Now you’re feeling like maybe you have drowned Sleeping underground Seasons never change; will you be there when I’m crying in the rain? Seasons never change; will you be there when I’m crying in the rain? (repeat) You danced on the water; died in the spring Moving ghosts blow through the bark Where the ravens used to sing Now the guards in the courtyard cry for their King Heard you breathing in the dark With the forest whispering Now blinded are my eyes Never knowing where to roam As you find the path again The worms take you home Seasons never change; will you be there when I’m crying in the rain? Seasons never change; will you be there when I’m crying in the rain? (repeat)

A gap in in a hedge, innocent at first, leads down a lane few dare to tread Where a land filled with wonder awaits for all those who dare pass unseen The creatures that dwell here are fabulous yet familiar… An Old English Gent; A prim and proper lady; the urchin boy full of fun and mischief A travelling bunch of misfits who fill the world with sinister fun Ensnared for a time without end, A child stumbles into this world that is neither normal nor sane Guard yourself from the lands outside, for the world we create is not cruel, nor kind Welcome one and all to the other side… please watch your head!
5.
A falling ray of light illuminates the whole of eternity, A distant stir of wind shakes something loose that had held tight for so long, Nothing stays the same forever, a break of a twig can spiral into chaos, As much as a falling tree, just falls and all is still. A man alone on a lane, late at night can be innocent, Just as the man in a crowded room, surrounded by friends is not, Where one sees truth and light, others see deceit and corruption. Nothing is as it seems, especially here and now. The world we created, the world we built, A world without limits, a world without guilt, The world we created, our world in pain, A world without conscience, a world of the vain. A wave crashes against the shore on a distant moon, An unstoppable force meets the immovable object and the world still turns, No one can stay the same forever, a child with the eyes of an ancient, And the old man who is younger than the day his wife died. A child isn't always full of laughter, nights filled with fear, Just as a prisoner can enjoy his days of solitude in peace, Innocence is in the eye of the beholder, judge or be judged, Nothing will ever be the same, time ticks on. The world we created, the world we built, A world without limits, a world without guilt, The world we created, our world in pain, A world without conscience, a world of the vain.

Time moves slow as you watch through the trees Where the woodsmen and the jackals Make songs for the queen Now paths appear as the jester lights the lamps Goes dancing through the darkness With the moonlight in his hands And will you stray from the borders to the fields Play riddles with the night-born as they huddle in the leaves And as you sleep, the clocks begin to stop The seasons never change in the kingdom of the lost Take my hand through the garden of blue weed Glowing, swaying in the night Leaves you chocking on the breeze The clock tower above you Chimes six bells for the sun As the blind witch of the forest Plays her fiddle just for fun Now you try to return by the pathway through the trees But the lamplights start to go out As the jester takes his leave As you dance on the water the piper plays his song Were you ever seen again now the carnival has gone?
7.
I am the man who walks this battlefield today I am the man who knows no fear or no pain And though I’ve wandered all the pathways of my life I got here beat and scarred and bloodied by the fight Will you stay with me? Will you trade in time? You know it never ends; all the darkness fades away Stay…
8.
Close your eyes as you walk through the fields Hear the cries of madcap dreamers Now the champion is revealed From the tower to the tavern Men are praying by their feasts Beggars sing their songs for sixpence As the Devils wipe their feet The fanfares grace you; the procession of the damned Will the demons bless you as they take you by the hand? The jester in the corner bears witness to the fall He’s sleeping now forever – come gather round one and all I’m a drifter on the edge of time But my time is running low Too many things are on my mind That I don’t wanna know Trace your steps as the madman lies in pain Played the fool in hopeless battles Played the pawn in jester’s games I curse the wind; did I live there long ago? Is it right that I should die here? Be a thorn without a rose? Trade me, save me from the gardens of the blind Betray me, pray thee – have you been here long as I? Enslave the saviour; will you let the shadow grow? Whispered the Drifter; I’m sorry but I have to go I’m a drifter on the edge of time But my time is running low Too many things are on my mind That I don’t wanna know I’m a drifter on the edge of time But my time is running low Too many things are on my mind That I don’t wanna know I'm a drifter on the edge; Drifter on the edge, drifter on the edge of time Drifter on the edge; Drifter on the edge, drifter on the edge of time Drifter on the edge, drifter on the edge Drifter on the edge, drifter on the edge
9.
A day without you; a life without love What can it mean to this vagabond? A long way home; another mile behind me Watch your step or the path will end Take me home, take me home Take me home to the girl I know Lead me home; let me roam Lead me home to the forest rose Coming back and I’m home Here tonight Tearing down the night road Coming home Wipe your tears ‘cos Here tonight Tearing down the night roads Coming home… tonight A forest rose or a thorn in my side? Sweet perfume or a poisoned vine? Let me go where flowers grow Let me go to the forest rose Coming back and I’m home Here tonight Tearing down the night road Coming home Wipe your tears ‘cos Here tonight Tearing down the night roads Coming home… tonight Take this poison from me; the sweet smell always the same Makes you fall into a slumber; will you walk these paths again? Coming to your senses; now you’re crawling on your knees Overwhelmed by the aroma; only these thorns make you bleed Coming back and I’m home Here tonight Tearing down the night road Coming home Wipe your tears ‘cos Here tonight Tearing down the night roads Coming home
10.
Gaps in the hedges; see what I want to see Will you hear the willows weeping? Will you bring them back to me? Now darkness all around me; brings shadows to the light And in the darkest corners I will sleep tonight Will you dream with me? Will you be there in the end? The darkness is still swirling – will you stay with me my friend? And I will dance as the shadows climbing high And they will sleep alongside you and I… you and I…
11.
Stories old and stories told Of children brave and children bold You see the light as it’s falling round your head In the night the fires are bright You see them dance in their eyes The summoned child chasing demons round your head You fought the war ; Years before All the nightmares ringing at my door I’m somewhere now I never thought I’d be You paid the price; rolled the dice Are we still singing here tonight? We’re somewhere now we never thought we would be Stories spun and stories sung Of children aged and children gone You chase the light as it’s falling through the shade You loved the night; gazed open skies Are visions falling in my eyes? You’re somewhere now you never wanted to be You’re reaching out; break through the shroud To an empty world you lived without Escape somehow to where we wanted to be Forest child will you stay with me always? Forest child will you stay with me? Forest child - chasing fires on the pathway Forest child will you stay with me? Forest child will you stay with me always? Forest child will you stay with me? Forest child - chasing lights on the pathway Forest child will you stay with me? Forest child will you stay with me always? Forest child will you stay with me? Forest child - chasing fires on the pathway Forest child will you stay with me? Forest child will you stay with me?

I was angry with my friend; I told my wrath, my wrath did end. I was angry with my foe: I told it not, my wrath did grow. And I watered it in fears, Night & morning with my tears: And I sunned it with smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles. And it grew both day and night. Till it bore an apple bright. And my foe beheld it shine, And he knew that it was mine. And into my garden stole, When the night had veiled the pole; In the morning glad I see; My foe outstretched beneath the tree. -= Words from A Poison Tree - By William Blake =-
